If inhaled, these fibers become trapped in lung tissues. Extensive medical research has shown that asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a cancer of the tissue that lines the chest cavity. Worse, the fibers linger permanently in the lungs and can trigger these illnesses as much as 30 years after the initial asbestos exposure.
